Substation Relay Technician

Location: Houston, TX; onsite work required

What you will do

• Install, commission, test, maintain, calibrate, modify, troubleshoot, and repair protective relaying and substation equipment.
• Perform functional and end-to-end testing of relay panels, transformers, circuit breakers, control circuits, and protection schemes.
• Develop relay macros, testing routines, and written commissioning, testing, and maintenance procedures.
• Review relay settings, logic equations, schematics, and wiring diagrams to identify errors and ensure alignment with protection designs.
• Prepare equipment isolation and restoration switching procedures, investigate electrical issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
• Coordinate with vendors and contractors on scheduling, inspections, testing, commissioning, and project management activities while leading site safety briefings.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of experience working in a substation environment; 3+ years is preferred.
• Experience with protective relays in systems from 480V to 345kV, including SEL, GE Multilin, Siemens, or similar equipment.
• Proficiency with relay test software such as AcSELerator, diagnostic tools, computer systems, and IED interface software.
• Knowledge of distribution control circuits, SCADA communication systems, programmable control systems, electrical theory, circuits, and trigonometry.
• Ability to interpret and troubleshoot electrical schematics and wiring diagrams; knowledge of NEC, NESC, OSHA, NFPA, and NERC testing requirements.
• Valid driver’s license required; ability to work onsite, in confined spaces, and in extreme weather conditions, including lifting equipment up to 50 lbs.

Nice to have

• Associate degree or equivalent vocational, college, or industry training in electrical or electronic sciences.
• Completion of a certified Substation or Relay Testing Apprentice Program.
• NETA Level 3 or Level 4 certification.
• Transformer monitoring systems experience.
• CDL-A and experience with project management, construction, testing, or operations.
