Staff Robotic Control Systems Engineer (Robotics)

Location: Fully remote, associated with Hawthorne, California; some travel may be required.

Salary: $190,000–$220,000 per year

What you will do

• Define control-system requirements from vehicle- and subsystem-level functional and performance requirements.
• Lead the design, analysis, development, tuning, verification, and validation of vehicle control systems.
• Build and mature simulations for controller design and analysis using MATLAB, Simulink, Python, and related tools.
• Design and prototype controllers for rover mobility systems, robotic arms, motor controllers, and high-gain antenna pointing.
• Support sensor and actuator selection, integrated hardware/software testbeds, calibration, and prototype-controller testing.
• Document control systems and work with software, avionics, integration, and test teams to convert prototypes into flight code and verify performance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM-related field.
• 10+ years of experience developing robotic control systems across the lifecycle from concept through flight operations.
• 10+ years of experience designing, testing, analyzing, and tuning robotic control systems for extraterrestrial rovers or similar mechanisms.
• Direct experience developing motor-controller control loops and robotic-arm control systems.
• Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink, MATLAB Control System Toolbox, or equivalent control-system design and analysis tools.
• Strong technical writing, communication, presentation, collaboration, and technical leadership skills.

Nice to have

• Experience designing and using testbeds with flight-like hardware and developing test plans.
• Experience validating control-system simulation and analysis tools.
• Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to control-systems engineers.
