TL;DR
Senior Experimental Engineer (Fusion Energy) (ultrashort-pulse laser diagnostics): Designing, assembling, testing, and deploying rugged vacuum-compatible and EMP-resilient spectrometers and detectors for ion, electron, neutron, and X/gamma-ray measurements with an accent on precision mechanical systems, in-vacuum cooling, and high-field experimental environments. Focus on integrating diagnostics with laser systems and target chambers, performing structural and thermal simulations, and creating ISO/DIN/CE-compliant documentation.

Location: Munich, Germany

Company

hirify.global is a fusion energy startup developing clean energy through advanced laser-matter interaction experiments.

What you will do

  • Design and develop mechanical systems for ion, electron, neutron, and X/gamma-ray diagnostics used in ultrafast laser experiments.
  • Design cooling systems for in-vacuum electronics and develop shielding, cooling, and isolation strategies for harsh electromagnetic environments.
  • Build and integrate vacuum-compatible diagnostic assemblies using Autodesk Inventor, with a focus on modularity, alignment, and maintainability.
  • Select UHV-compatible materials, components, and sealing methods for experimental vacuum chambers.
  • Support assembly, alignment, and field deployment at remote experimental facilities while collaborating with physicists, electrical engineers, and systems integrators.
  • Perform structural, thermal, and mechanical simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics and prepare technical documentation, BOMs, risk assessments, and safety documentation.

Requirements

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related discipline, plus 5+ years of industry experience.
  • Experience designing and building precision mechanical systems for high-energy laser experiments or similar research environments.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor and hands-on experience with vacuum-compatible systems and UHV materials.
  • Strong understanding of cooling systems for in-vacuum electronics.
  • Familiarity with ISO, DIN, and CE standards for mechanical safety, manufacturing, and system integration.
  • Ability to work independently in laboratory and remote deployment settings, with strong communication and collaboration skills.

Nice to have

  • Experience deploying diagnostics in high-intensity laser facilities.
  • Familiarity with Thomson parabola, time-of-flight, or scintillator-based detector systems.
  • Experience with COMSOL Multiphysics, Geant4, OpenFOAM, or other physics codes for shielding and system interaction modeling.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly, and transitioning experimental hardware into low-volume manufacturing.

Culture & Benefits

  • Purpose-driven work focused on developing clean, safe, and abundant fusion energy.
  • Collaboration with scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs in the fusion field.
  • Public transport reimbursement and company pension plan.
  • Complimentary health insurance and EGYM Wellpass fitness club access.
  • Professional development support and healthy office snacks.
