Senior Software Engineer for Platform Instrument Control (AI)

Location: San Francisco Bay Area; on-site

Salary: $185,000–$225,000 per year plus equity

What you will do

• Wrap heterogeneous instruments, including ultrasound-on-chip systems, cameras, stages, temperature controls, and delay generators, into reusable and well-tested device abstractions.
• Design and build an orchestration layer for trigger management, checkpoint coordination, and safe experimental execution.
• Implement safety and reproducibility features such as parameter bounds, interlocks, dry-run modes, and simulation.
• Integrate streaming and backpressure management with the data platform team for large-scale acquisition.
• Enable platform engineers and scientists to build robust protocols through clean APIs and Python-based interfaces.
• Advise on hardware integration needs and mentor scientists and engineers on software best practices and the SDLC.

Requirements

• Deep systems engineering experience with real-time device control, concurrency, memory, and performance.
• Experience building hardware or scientific instrument integrations for a team.
• Strong API and SDK design skills, including clean abstractions, sensible defaults, asynchronous workflows, and large-data handling.
• Empathy for biologists, chemists, and other non-technical users building workflows on measurement platforms.
• Ability to work on-site in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Nice to have

• Experience with scientific instrumentation such as ultrasound or microscopy.
• Experience with lab automation, liquid handling, robotics, or high-throughput data acquisition.
• Experience shipping software from zero to one in a startup or newly formed team.
