System Engineer, Core Diagnostics Lead (Automotive)

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina, United States; 4–5 days per week in the office. Regular in-person meetings, company events, and occasional travel are required.

Salary: $160,000–$192,500 annual base salary, plus eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

What you will do

• Lead the definition of vehicle diagnostic functions, signals, operating behavior, diagnostic codes, detection conditions, recovery rules, notifications, and emergency operations.
• Develop diagnostic databases and datasets, including ODX/CDD data with DTCs and vehicle module calibration or configuration.
• Govern functional safety strategy, delivery processes, engineering reviews, KPIs, and technical decision-making across vehicle systems.
• Act as the system authority for interfaces and integration readiness across hardware, software, controls, connectivity, and supplier domains.
• Manage system-level constraints including compute, timing, power, performance, reliability, latency, accuracy, and environmental conditions.
• Mentor multidisciplinary system and feature teams while translating technical risks into executive Go/No-Go decisions and improving release workflows.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with 12+ years of experience.
• Expertise in automotive system and platform development, modeling, vehicle electrical architecture, ECU software stacks, and reusable vehicle platforms.
• Expert knowledge of UDS diagnostics, ISO 14229, DTC/DID/RID definitions, diagnostic communication tools, and automotive protocols including CAN, LIN, FlexRay, and Ethernet.
• Experience with DFMEA, functional safety, system requirements, failure analysis, diagnostic database development, and engineering governance.
• Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, hardware-in-the-loop testing, dSPACE ControlDesk and AutomationDesk, and embedded or cloud-connected systems.
• Proficiency with Jira, GitHub or GitLab, Jenkins, Artifactory, ALM/PLM tools, and Siemens Polarion, IBM DOORS Next Gen, or PTC Windchill.

Nice to have

• Experience with Volkswagen DIDAS diagnostics databases.
• Background in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or advanced mobility systems.
• Experience with A2B, LVDS, CANalyzer, CANoe, and other vehicle network tools.
• Recognition as a systems or controls industry thought leader through awards, keynote speaking, or standards participation.
