Senior Engineering Manager - Firmware (Embedded Systems)

Location: Wilmington, Massachusetts, United States. MKS generally hires candidates residing in states where it is registered to do business. Certain roles may require applicants to be U.S. persons under ITAR or EAR regulations.

Salary: $155,000–$205,000 per year, plus eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus.

What you will do

• Lead the software engineering team within Plasma Solutions and guide experienced mechanical engineers across R&D, new product introduction, and sustaining engineering.
• Oversee the full firmware lifecycle, from requirements and architecture through implementation, testing, validation, release, and maintenance.
• Drive product specifications, circuit analysis, PCB design, design for cost and manufacturability, documentation, and test-plan development.
• Provide technical direction on embedded systems using microcontrollers, processors, hardware interfaces, RTOS, model-based design, and bare-metal environments.
• Coordinate design reviews, PFMEA/DFMEA, failure analysis, compliance activities, and resolution of complex issues in new and released products.
• Collaborate with hardware, systems, software, product marketing, and new product introduction teams while managing budgets, schedules, work plans, and performance requirements.

Requirements

• BS in Electrical Engineering or related experience of more than 10 years; alternatively, an MS/PhD with at least 5 years of related experience.
• At least 8 years of firmware or embedded software development experience and at least 2 years of engineering management or technical leadership experience.
• Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems and experience with microcontrollers and interfaces such as SPI, I2C, and UART.
• Familiarity with RTOS or similar environments, firmware testing and automation, version control, CI/CD, and release processes.
• Knowledge of product development processes, CE, SEMI S2, F47, RoHS, and other regulatory requirements.
• Strong problem-solving, technical communication, product specification, system design, documentation, and test-plan development skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with security, bootloaders, or OTA updates.
• Background in system architecture and scalability.
• Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies and industrial or SME device development.
• Experience using JTAG, oscilloscopes, or logic analyzers.
• Strong people management skills.
