TL;DR
Engineer I–III, Thermal-Hydraulic Safety Analysis & V&V (Nuclear) (Xe-100): Performing thermo-hydraulic transient and accident analyses, safety evaluations, and code verification and validation for a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor with an accent on core cooling, heat removal, safety limits, and regulatory compliance. Focus on evaluating AOOs, DBEs, DBAs, and BDBEs, developing PIRTs and scaling analyses, and supporting NRC submittals and PRA with defensible safety margins.

Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland, United States; 4 days onsite per week

Salary: $85,000–$135,000 annually, depending on level and qualifications.

Company

hirify.global develops nuclear reactor technology, including the Xe-100 high-temperature gas-cooled reactor and its TRISO fuel safety case.

What you will do

  • Perform thermo-hydraulic transient and accident analyses for AOOs, DBEs, DBAs, and BDBEs using approved system codes and methodologies.
  • Evaluate core heat removal, coolant flow, heat transfer, temperature distributions, cooling capability, and defense-in-depth.
  • Support SSC safety classifications, safety functions, thermal-hydraulic safety limits, margins, and acceptance criteria.
  • Develop PIRTs and scaling analyses and assess the applicability of experimental data and analytical methods to the Xe-100 design.
  • Support V&V and software validation activities for thermo-hydraulic analysis codes.
  • Prepare technical documentation for regulatory submittals, topical reports, safety analysis reports, code applicability reports, and NRC requests for additional information.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nuclear, chemical, mechanical, or another relevant engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Level I: typically 0–2 years of engineering experience; Level II: typically 3 years; Level III: typically 5 years.
  • Academic or professional exposure to thermo-hydraulics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, or reactor systems analysis.
  • Ability to apply NRC regulatory guidance, including RG 1.203, and follow hirify.global procedures for safety-related calculations.
  • Ability to collaborate with neutronics, structural, materials, and reactor systems engineering teams.
  • Availability to work onsite four days per week in Gaithersburg, Maryland, during 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Monday–Friday hours.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with RELAP, TRACE, GOTHIC, Flownex, or similar thermal-hydraulic system codes.
  • Experience with V&V or Commercial Grade Dedication activities.
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in engineering or a related field.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time, exempt employment with approximately 10% travel.
  • Work governed by NQA-1 quality assurance requirements and hirify.global procedures.
  • 401(k) plan with employer match.
