TL;DR
Senior Network Engineer (Cisco): Engineering, maintaining, configuring, and troubleshooting DHS enterprise WAN, LAN, SD-WAN, VPN, wireless, and perimeter security infrastructure with an accent on Cisco technologies, firewalls, cloud interconnects, and network modernization. Focus on designing multi-transport SD-WAN solutions, resolving Tier 2/Tier 3 incidents, performing root cause analysis, and supporting 24/7/365 critical network escalation.

Location: Hybrid in Ashburn, Virginia, United States; scheduled and ad hoc travel within the United States may be required up to 35% of the time.

Salary: $120,000–$140,000 per year.

What you will do

  • Engineer, configure, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise WAN, LAN, SD-WAN, VPN, WLAN, routers, switches, firewalls, VPN gateways, load balancers, and perimeter security controls.
  • Provide Tier 2/Tier 3 escalation support for outages, circuit degradation, and performance issues, including root cause analysis and vendor coordination.
  • Design and maintain SD-WAN solutions using multiple transports, application-aware routing, network virtualization, and predefined routing policies.
  • Support network hardware upgrades, SD-WAN transitions, cloud interconnects across AWS, Azure, and GCP, remote field sites, and infrastructure modernization.
  • Maintain network diagrams, topology maps, inventory databases, standard operating procedures, and change-control documentation.
  • Participate in a 24/7/365 on-call rotation and coordinate emergency changes, incident reporting, and project deliverables with program and project managers.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of network engineering experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 14+ years without a bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 10 years supporting a large, complex federal agency, with strong knowledge of TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, MPLS, VPNs, and VLANs.
  • Expertise with Cisco and firewall technologies, including the ability to perform firewall changes.
  • Hands-on experience with SDN technologies such as Cisco ACI or VMware NSX, plus strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in management information systems, computer science, engineering, networking and telecommunications, or a related technical field, unless the experience alternative applies.
  • Ability to successfully receive a DHS Customs and Border Protection background check and Public Trust clearance.

Nice to have

  • Active CBP BI or a CBP BI completed within the past three years.
  • CCNA or CCNP certification.
  • Experience with Zero Trust, Zscaler, Palo Alto, Cisco SD-WAN, Cisco HyperFlex, Cisco StealthWatch, Cisco ACI, or Cisco Firepower.
  • Previous CBP experience, followed by DHS or Department of War experience.
