SME Network Engineer

Location: Lorton, Virginia, United States. The role involves recurring server-room and field operations duties.

What you will do

• Design, document, and maintain Layer 2/Layer 3 network architecture, routing, segmentation, firewall zoning, VPN paths, and COOP/DR failover routes.
• Diagnose and prevent enterprise network outages using packet capture, flow analysis, monitoring, and log correlation.
• Lead network upgrades, configuration changes, ACL and firewall policy adjustments, and planned maintenance.
• Support security hardening, vulnerability remediation, IA/ATO accreditation artifacts, and collaboration with ISSO and security teams.
• Integrate network dependencies across Active Directory, DNS/DHCP, VMware, storage, applications, and cross-site operations.
• Contribute to COOP/DR planning, lab replication, patch validation, network simulation, and mission-readiness coordination with DHS technical leads.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in IT, Engineering, or a related field, or five years of equivalent experience.
• 10+ years of enterprise network engineering experience with increasing responsibility.
• Hands-on expertise with Cisco routing and switching, Palo Alto or Fortinet firewalls, VPN and IPsec architecture, PKI integration, VLANs, VRFs, and security zones.
• Experience with packet analysis and network monitoring or telemetry tools such as SolarWinds, NetFlow, and Splunk.
• Ability to create complete network diagrams and architecture documentation from configurations, logs, and analysis.
• Ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs. regularly and occasionally up to 80 lbs.; the role requires standing, kneeling, crouching, and working in server-room environments.

Nice to have

• CCNA, CCNP Enterprise, CCNP Security, PCNSE, Fortinet NSE4/NSE5, or equivalent CCIE-level competency.
• Experience with federal law enforcement IT systems, COOP/DR execution, VPN transitions, network segmentation, and multi-site resiliency.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes or container environments and 24/7 high-availability operations.
