TL;DR
Network Engineer (Cisco): Engineering, deploying, maintaining, and troubleshooting DHS enterprise WAN, LAN, VPN, WLAN, and perimeter security infrastructure with an accent on Cisco networking, firewalls, and complex federal environments. Focus on resolving Tier 2/3 incidents, supporting SD-WAN and cloud interconnect upgrades, maintaining network documentation, and coordinating critical escalations in a 24/7/365 on-call rotation.

Location: Hybrid in Ashburn, Virginia, United States; travel within the United States may be required on short notice or as scheduled, up to 35% of the time.

Salary: $90,000–$110,000 per year

What you will do

  • Engineer, install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise WAN, LAN, VPN, WLAN, switches, routers, firewalls, VPN gateways, load balancers, and perimeter security controls.
  • Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 escalation support for outages, circuit degradation, and performance issues, including root cause analysis and vendor coordination.
  • Support network hardware upgrades, SD-WAN transitions, cloud interconnects across AWS, Azure, and GCP, remote field sites, and infrastructure modernization.
  • Maintain network diagrams, topology maps, asset inventories, standard operating procedures, and change-control tickets in tools such as Visio, ServiceNow, and Remedy.
  • Coordinate network engineering deliverables, milestones, and resource planning with program and project managers.
  • Maintain readiness for a 24/7/365 on-call rotation and respond to critical incidents within SLA limits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in management information systems, computer science, engineering, or a related technical field with 5+ years of experience, or 8+ years of network engineering experience without a degree.
  • At least five years of verifiable network engineering experience supporting a large, complex federal agency.
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, MPLS, VPNs, and VLANs.
  • Expertise with Cisco technologies and firewall technologies.
  • Ability to successfully receive a DHS Customs and Border Protection background check (CBP BI) and Public Trust clearance.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, sit for extended periods, and travel within the United States up to 35% of the time.

Nice to have

  • Intermediate skills in at least three of Cisco SD-WAN, Cisco HyperFlex, Cisco StealthWatch, Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure, and Palo Alto firewalls.
  • Active CCNA, CCNP Routing and Switching, and/or JNCIP certification.
  • Previous CBP BI completed within the past four years.
  • Willingness to cross-train in the listed technologies.
