TL;DR
Electrical Engineering Internship - Summer 2027 (Nuclear Energy): Supporting the design, integration, testing, commissioning, and operation of instrumentation and automated control systems for a fluoride-salt-cooled high-temperature test reactor with an accent on measurement instrumentation, process automation, and multidisciplinary systems integration. Focus on analyzing technical data, troubleshooting and validating control systems, interpreting engineering documentation, and improving system performance and reliability under engineering guidance.

Location: Onsite in Alameda, CA, Albuquerque, NM, or Oak Ridge, TN

Salary: $30–$34 per hour for onsite employees at the Alameda, CA headquarters

What you will do

  • Support the design, implementation, testing, commissioning, and operation of instrumentation and control systems for a test reactor.
  • Develop, integrate, and maintain measurement instrumentation and automated digital process control systems.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams on electrical, instrumentation, and control system integration.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and document technical data for engineering and project objectives.
  • Support laboratory testing, prototyping, troubleshooting, system validation, and verification.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering documentation, project updates, and laboratory records.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. program in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering, controls engineering, instrumentation, circuits, sensors, data acquisition, and automated control systems.
  • Experience with control system software such as LabVIEW, PLCs, or similar automation platforms.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, technical specifications, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work onsite at one of the listed U.S. locations and comply with Department of Energy Part 810 export-control access requirements.

Nice to have

  • Experience with control system analysis, design, or industrial communication protocols.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems, engineering software, programming languages, or scripting tools for controls, automation, or data analysis.
  • Technical skills demonstrated through laboratory work, research, extracurricular projects, personal projects, or prior internship experience.
