Senior Embedded Software Engineer - Ethernet Retimers

Location: San Jose, California, United States

Salary: $133,200–$185,000 per year, depending on experience, level, and business need; discretionary bonus, incentives, and benefits may apply.

What you will do

• Debug firmware behavior across Ethernet configurations, link states, and failure modes with the system validation team.
• Investigate and fix embedded C firmware issues across PHY, SERDES, FEC/PCS, MAC, and retimer components.
• Support customer bring-up, field issue triage, and deployment integration with field applications engineers.
• Develop firmware features for SERDES configuration, link training, equalization, and diagnostics.
• Partner with SoC, field applications, platform, and validation teams across the product lifecycle.
• Help bring Taurus products from initial silicon bring-up through customer deployment.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 5+ years of firmware development or embedded systems engineering experience.
• Hands-on Ethernet experience at the system or device level, including PHY, SERDES, retimers, gearboxes, NICs, switches, or related devices.
• Strong embedded C/C++ skills and experience working with firmware on real hardware.
• Ability to debug hardware/software interactions using register access, embedded SDKs, link-state machines, PHY telemetry, and debug logs.
• Familiarity with Linux development tools including gcc/clang, make, bash, gdb, and git.

Nice to have

• Experience with switch or NIC management software, SAI, OpenBMC, retimer or gearbox firmware, or SDK/API development.
• Knowledge of PMA, FEC, signal integrity, equalization, jitter, eye diagrams, and link margin.
• Python scripting for debugging, test automation, or data analysis.
• Experience with BERTs, oscilloscopes, or related lab equipment.
• Experience mentoring engineers or leading cross-team debug efforts.
