Senior Firmware Engineer (C/C++)

Location: Los Angeles, United States. Applicants must meet U.S. Government export-control requirements: U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or eligible to obtain the required authorizations.

Salary: $150,000–$185,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, and maintain firmware for reactor instrumentation, control, monitoring, and electrical support systems.
• Develop C/C++ embedded software for microcontrollers, embedded processors, and real-time hardware platforms.
• Bring up new hardware, debug board-level issues, and validate firmware with laboratory equipment.
• Implement interfaces including SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, and RS-485 for sensors, actuators, telemetry, and diagnostics.
• Collaborate with electrical, controls, software, systems, safety, test, and licensing teams on hardware/software requirements and regulatory needs.
• Support hardware-in-the-loop testing, automated test frameworks, integration campaigns, verification procedures, and configuration-controlled releases.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Five or more years of production software development experience in C, C++, Python, Rust, or similar languages for hardware-integrated or embedded systems.
• Experience with multithreaded or multiprocess systems, IPC, networking, message passing, or publish/subscribe architectures.
• Experience integrating software with sensors, controllers, data acquisition systems, power supplies, or other hardware-facing interfaces.
• Strong debugging skills across software, hardware, and system-integration boundaries.
• Ability to design clear interfaces, data models, state machines, and testable system behaviors while working through evolving requirements.

Nice to have

• Experience in regulated or safety-critical environments such as nuclear, aerospace, defense, automotive, maritime, medical devices, industrial controls, or robotics.
• Experience with RTOS, bare-metal firmware, hardware bring-up, board-level debugging, and firmware validation.
• Familiarity with bootloaders, firmware updates, device drivers, low-level peripherals, and embedded communication stacks.
• Experience with formal design reviews, hazard analyses, verification plans, qualification documentation, or safety-critical standards.
