TL;DR
Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer (Metal Additive Manufacturing): Owning and optimizing Velo3D’s metal additive manufacturing operations from post-print evaluation through post-processing, metrology, and shipment with an accent on yield, throughput, dimensional accuracy, and process capability. Focus on developing wire EDM and furnace workflows, building shrink-rate and scaling methodologies, resolving distortion and cracking, and translating inspection data into design and production improvements.

Location: Fremont, California, United States; on-site. U.S. citizenship is required due to government contract and security requirements.

Salary: $145,000–$155,000 per year, plus benefits and potential bonus or equity compensation.

What you will do

  • Own post-build technical execution, including visual inspections, process parameter reviews, and initial quality evaluations.
  • Develop and optimize post-processing workflows for furnace thermal cycles, Solukon depowdering, and wire EDM.
  • Define inspection plans, perform 3D scanning, analyze deviations against CAD and drawings, and generate reports.
  • Develop shrink-rate databases, scaling factors, compensation strategies, and asymmetric scaling methods.
  • Provide Design for Additive Manufacturing guidance and resolve cracking, deformation, and dimensional nonconformance.
  • Lead continuous improvement, NCR investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and cross-functional production initiatives.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in metal additive manufacturing, production engineering, or advanced manufacturing.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T, dimensional inspection, scan-based metrology, and measurement-driven process improvements.
  • Experience leading structured continuous improvement initiatives involving experimentation, data analysis, implementation, and standardization.
  • Ability to work directly on the manufacturing floor and collaborate with operators, technicians, engineering, quality, and leadership.
