TL;DR
Lead Engineer, Drive/Energy/ADAS Functional Safety FuSa and SOTIF (Automotive Safety): Defining and governing functional safety and SOTIF strategies for electric powertrains, energy systems, ADAS, and automated driving systems with an accent on safety lifecycle execution, technical safety requirements, and structured safety cases. Focus on building traceable GSN safety arguments, addressing AI/ML perception edge cases, and aligning complex cross-functional systems with ISO 26262, ISO 21448, and UL 4600.

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina, or Novi, Michigan; 4–5 days per week in the office with regular in-person meetings and travel.

Salary: $160,000–$192,500 annual base salary, plus eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

What you will do

  • Define, develop, and govern functional safety and SOTIF strategies across Drive, Energy, ADAS, and automated driving systems.
  • Align HARA, Safety Goals, and SOTIF strategies with functional safety teams.
  • Develop and maintain Technical Safety Concepts and Technical Safety Requirements across sensors, ECUs, software, actuators, networks, and operational assets.
  • Own end-to-end safety case frameworks, including claims, arguments, supporting evidence, and GSN structures.
  • Integrate SOTIF analysis of performance limitations, triggering conditions, foreseeable misuse, and edge cases in AI/ML and perception-based systems.
  • Support design reviews, program milestones, release gates, change control, and the development of a scalable Safety Management System.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 12–15 years of experience in functional safety, system safety, or safety assurance within automotive, ADAS, autonomous systems, robotics, or other safety-critical domains.
  • Experience completing at least one full safety lifecycle from concept through production launch.
  • Expertise in structured safety cases, including claims, arguments, and evidence.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 26262, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), UL 4600, HARA, FMEA, FTA, and STPA.
  • AI/ML experience, strong systems thinking, and the ability to lead cross-functional alignment through influence.

Nice to have

  • Master’s or advanced degree in a related discipline.
  • Experience with advanced ADAS, autonomous systems, and multi-sensor perception stacks.
  • Experience with UL 4600-aligned safety cases, ISO 8800, AI/ML safety, data pipeline validation, performance monitoring, or ODD frameworks.
  • Experience with regulatory reviews, audits, certification processes, or fast-paced startup environments.
