TL;DR
Automation & Controls Engineer, Functional Safety (Industrial Automation/Nuclear Enrichment): Designing, commissioning, and validating safety-critical PLC, instrumentation, interlock, and safety instrumented systems for hazardous industrial operations with an accent on functional safety lifecycle activities, shutdown logic, and regulatory compliance. Focus on hazard analysis, SIL determination, HAZOP/LOPA, FAT/SAT, commissioning, and building field-ready controls systems that protect people, equipment, and operations.

What you will do

  • Design, specify, commission, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, SCADA, instrumentation, control panels, and safety instrumented systems for hazardous industrial equipment.
  • Lead the functional safety lifecycle, including hazard analysis, SIL determination, SRS development, verification, validation, and proof testing.
  • Develop controls architectures, interlocks, permissives, shutdown logic, cause-and-effect matrices, and alarm strategies.
  • Support design reviews, HAZOPs, LOPAs, FMEA, FAT/SAT, commissioning, and operational readiness activities.
  • Produce requirements, test plans, drawings, change records, and other engineering documentation for regulated safety-critical systems.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, process, nuclear, operations, and safety teams to deliver reliable facility systems.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of IEC 61508, IEC 61511, ISA 84, or equivalent functional safety standards.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Controls, Chemical, Mechanical, or Nuclear Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience designing, commissioning, or maintaining industrial automation and control systems.
  • Hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, industrial networks, instrumentation, and control panels.
  • Experience developing and validating interlocks, safety functions, trip logic, and shutdown systems for hazardous processes.
  • Ability to work on-site with high-hazard equipment in controlled facility environments, including extended hours and weekends when necessary.

Nice to have

  • TÜV Functional Safety Engineer certification or an equivalent credential.
  • Experience with uranium processing, nuclear facilities, chemical plants, test stands, or other high-consequence industrial systems.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70/NEC, UL 508A, SCCR, grounding, overcurrent protection, hazardous locations, machine safety, and pressure systems.
  • Familiarity with SIL verification, fault tree analysis, and management of change.
