Director, External Affairs

Location: Remote, but must reside in Alabama, Georgia, or Tennessee. Frequent travel of approximately 30–40% is required across GA, TN, AL, and other markets.

What you will do

• Build and maintain relationships with state and local officials, Congressional and state district offices, community leaders, nonprofits, chambers of commerce, and civic organizations.
• Lead local government affairs and community engagement across operating localities.
• Design and execute community initiatives focused on workforce development, education partnerships, environmental stewardship, and economic development.
• Develop policy intelligence and monitor local government, policy, and community risks.
• Collaborate with Corporate Communications on regional outreach, public messaging, and reputation-building campaigns.
• Serve as a spokesperson and translate complex energy, technology, regulatory, and operational topics into clear communications for local audiences.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Affairs, Public Policy, Political Science, Community Relations, or a related field.
• At least 7 years of relevant experience in local government affairs, community engagement, or public affairs.
• Demonstrated success building relationships with officials, district offices, and community stakeholders in complex, multi-jurisdictional environments.
• Experience leading community-facing initiatives from conception through execution.
• Strong strategic communications, messaging development, facilitation, relationship-building, and executive presentation skills.
• Ability to represent an organization with credibility, warmth, and professionalism at the local level.

Nice to have

• Existing relationships with officials and community organizations in Alabama, Georgia, or Tennessee.
• Experience working in or alongside local government.
• Background in community affairs, civic engagement, or corporate social responsibility.
• Familiarity with the energy, technology, or data center industry.
