Sr. Staff Photonics Systems Engineer (Silicon Photonics)

Location: Toronto, ON, Canada; flexible hybrid workplace

Salary: $185,000–$217,000 CAD per year, plus equity and other rewards.

What you will do

• Design and deliver high-volume laser and optical products with cross-functional engineering teams.
• Develop laser and photonics concepts in collaboration with product and architecture teams.
• Translate module requirements and architecture specifications into detailed engineering execution plans.
• Solve design and manufacturing challenges for high-performance laser solutions.
• Build photonic systems, control algorithms, PICs, and control ASICs with electronics, photonics, mechanical, thermal, and packaging teams.
• Define production test and validation protocols, characterize components, debug test results, and coordinate component development with external vendors.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related discipline, with at least 3 years of relevant post-degree experience, or equivalent.
• At least 8 years of experience with photonic devices, photonic integrated circuits, and semiconductor physics.
• Strong understanding of silicon photonics.
• Experience collaborating with photonics design, packaging, thermal, systems engineering, and firmware teams.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong problem-solving skills for challenges without obvious solutions.

Nice to have

• Strong understanding of laser physics and experience with lasers or silicon photonics for datacom applications.
• Experience with control systems, systems engineering, or high-volume manufacturing.
• Technical leadership experience with cross-functional teams.
• Ability to learn quickly and work as a self-starter.
