TL;DR
Electrical Systems Engineer (Nuclear I&C): Defining and validating the electrical requirements, interfaces, failure analyses, and qualification plans for inherently safe microreactor instrumentation and control systems with an accent on regulatory traceability, system integration, and grid interconnection. Focus on decomposing verifiable requirements, closing high-risk FMEA findings through testing, supporting licensing documentation, and bridging controls software with physical sensors, actuators, and I/O.

Location: Los Angeles, United States. Applicants must meet U.S. Government export-control requirements: U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or eligible to obtain the required authorization.

Salary: $150,000–$220,000 per year plus equity. Senior level: $150,000–$185,000; Staff level: $180,000–$220,000.

Company

hirify.global is a Series C clean-energy startup developing mass-producible, inherently safe microreactors for terrestrial, underwater, and space applications.

What you will do

  • Define and maintain the electrical requirements baseline for reactor instrumentation and control systems, including functional, performance, safety, regulatory, and operational requirements.
  • Develop hardware and software interface control documents covering signals, timing, protocols, power, grounding, failure states, and subsystem integration.
  • Lead I&C design FMEA activities, calculate risk priority numbers, and drive high-risk failure modes through testing and mitigation to closure.
  • Create validation and qualification plans, including test setups, instrumentation, test cases, and measurable pass/fail criteria, and support bench and testbed execution.
  • Support licensing documentation, safety analyses, site certification of non-listed components, and utility grid-interconnection studies.
  • Translate customer load, power-quality, redundancy, interface, and data requirements into specified and verifiable system requirements while coordinating with controls software and hardware teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in electrical or I&C systems engineering, including ownership of requirements through verification.
  • Experience writing decomposed, verifiable requirements with measurable acceptance criteria.
  • Experience leading FMEA or equivalent reliability analysis and converting findings into test and mitigation plans.
  • Experience creating validation and qualification plans, maintaining cross-organizational interface control documents, and working with test teams.
  • Experience delivering hardware under a formal quality program such as NQA-1, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, AS9100, IEC 61508, or a comparable standard.

Nice to have

  • Experience in nuclear, aerospace, defense, medical-device, or another regulated environment.
  • Experience with nuclear I&C standards, NRC or DOE licensing submissions, and regulator responses.
  • Experience with NRTL field evaluation, non-listed equipment, functional safety, SIL analysis, or common-cause and single-failure analysis.
  • Familiarity with DOORS, Jama, Polarion, Cameo/SysML, human factors, alarm management, NUREG-0711, or ISA 18.2.

Culture & Benefits

  • Equity through a significant stock option package.
  • Work is centered on complex clean-energy, defense, and space systems.
  • Customer and stakeholder collaboration may require in-person meetings and travel.
  • Teams prioritize systems thinking, end-user focus, unconventional solutions, and nuanced technical decision-making.
