High Power Electrical Systems Engineer

Location: Los Angeles, United States. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, asylees, or eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations under U.S. Government export regulations.

Salary: $150,000–$185,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

• Own the common DC bus architecture connecting battery energy storage, reactor power conversion, and grid-tied inverter systems.
• Define the expansion architecture for scaling from a single unit to a multi-reactor plant, including paralleling, fault isolation, protection selectivity, and control hierarchy.
• Specify and verify high-voltage system functions, including precharge, insulation monitoring, grid-forming and grid-following operation, shutdown, load shedding, black-start, and communications failover.
• Analyze fault behavior, protection coordination, control response, and system stability across load rejection, short-circuit, ground, isolation, and converter faults.
• Build and operate the high-power distribution test system, coordinating with facilities, controls infrastructure, and test teams on instrumentation, automation, and test campaigns.
• Own power electronics supplier relationships and drive technology selection, system integration, equipment layout, and the electrical development roadmap.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in power electronics or high-power electrical systems, including system architecture ownership through hardware bring-up.
• Direct experience with DC bus architectures, protection and coordination, grounding and isolation, and fault-current analysis.
• Hands-on experience with grid-tied inverters, DC/DC conversion, battery energy storage, and high-power motor or generator inverter systems.
• Experience with product-level EMI/EMC testing, power electronics supplier management, and high-power electrical test campaigns involving energized high-voltage systems.
• Knowledge of applicable electrical safety, grid interconnection, battery, and power-conversion standards, including NEC, NFPA, UL, IEEE, or IEC standards.

Nice to have

• Experience with grid-forming controls, droop control, virtual synchronous machines, and black-start demonstrations.
• Experience scaling power architectures across paralleled units or multi-unit sites.
• System modeling experience with PLECS, PSCAD, Simulink/Simscape, ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower.
• Experience with high-dv/dt EMI/EMC design, formal quality programs, safety-related applications, or building test infrastructure from scratch.
• Background in utility-scale storage, marine, traction, aerospace electrification, or another high-power domain.
