Power Electronics Engineer (Fusion Energy)

hirify.global is developing a commercial fusion energy system based on computer-controlled arrays of planar coils for a simpler stellarator architecture.

What you will do

• Lead topology selection, component specification, and schematic design for the HTS magnet power supply.
• Design modular high-current power converters with arrayed operation and independent control.
• Simulate steady-state, dynamic, and fault-response behavior using PLECS, LTspice, PSIM, Simulink, or related tools.
• Integrate embedded control hardware and firmware, including current regulation, feedback, and fault handling.
• Develop magnet protection, thermal management, PCB layout, cabling, and mechanical integration.
• Create test plans and perform hardware bring-up, debugging, staged-load testing, and parameter optimization.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience designing and testing power converters, preferably in high-current or magnet power supply applications.
• Experience with DC/DC converters, buck/boost, full-bridge, or current-regulated linear power stages.
• Knowledge of IGBTs, MOSFETs, SiC/GaN devices, high-current busbars, current sensors, signal conditioning, and analog control circuits.
• Experience with magnet power supplies, superconducting magnet interfaces, quench detection, crowbar protection, thermal design, and EMI/EMC mitigation.
• Ability to work on-site in an industrial facility with heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and occasionally work nights, weekends, on-call shifts, or travel.

Nice to have

• Experience with FPGA- or DSP-based digital control systems.
• Familiarity with Altium Designer, OrCAD, Flotherm, SolidWorks, oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and electronic loads.
• Experience with CAN, RS-485, or Modbus communications.
• Background in fusion, accelerators, or industrial high-current systems.
