Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) (IoT)

Location: Ottawa, ON, Canada; hybrid work with mandatory onboarding in Ottawa during the first week, at least one in-person interview, and quarterly office visits.

Salary: CA$115,000–CA$147,500 per year.

What you will do

• Design and build automated test frameworks and libraries for REST APIs, React interfaces, security, integration, and end-to-end testing.
• Develop test harnesses, device simulators, performance tools, and mocks that emulate IoT devices and video streams at scale.
• Integrate automated suites into CI/CD pipelines and improve fast, reliable feedback across builds and deployments.
• Contribute to architecture discussions, RFCs, code reviews, observability, reliability, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
• Define test strategies and coverage for device management, connectivity, video playback, recording, streaming, and distributed cloud systems.
• Mentor engineers and QA team members while advocating for quality and testability across the engineering organization.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software testing experience with strong hands-on coding ability and experience building automation frameworks from the ground up.
• Strong Python skills and working proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript and/or Rust.
• Experience with Linux, AWS services such as Lambda, DynamoDB, SQS, and Kinesis, and distributed serverless SaaS applications.
• Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines, reading production code, and participating in code reviews.
• Strong systems thinking, communication skills, and the ability to provide technically substantiated feedback.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical engineering experience. Must be a Canadian citizen or eligible to work in Canada and comply with a criminal records check and hirify.global security policies.

Nice to have

• Infrastructure as Code experience with CDK, Terraform, or Serverless Framework.
• IoT communication protocols, device simulators, video streaming, or video pipeline testing experience.
• Monitoring and observability experience with Datadog, Grafana, or CloudWatch.
• Experience with Snowflake, Elasticsearch, open-source testing tools, or fast-growing SaaS environments.
• Background combining SDET and full-stack development work.

Hiring process
