Associate General Counsel, Privacy, Product & AI

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco or remote within the United States

Salary: $250,000–$275,000 plus equity

What you will do

• Own and continuously improve privacy programs for patient and payor data, including HIPAA compliance, state privacy laws, data mapping, individual rights, breach response, and notification workflows.
• Build and lead the AI governance program, including responsible AI policies, AI inventory, use-case intake and review, model risk classification, monitoring, and incident response.
• Provide legal review and final sign-off for internal AI tools and AI-powered product features such as chart updates, documentation extraction, and clinical decision support.
• Advise Product, Engineering, Operations, Clinical, Security, and IT teams on privacy, AI, product-regulatory, HIPAA Security Rule, SOC 2, and HITRUST matters.
• Lead business associate agreements, payor data-use terms, vendor privacy risk, regulatory change management, and privacy and AI incident response.
• Present privacy and AI risks to executives and the Board, manage outside counsel, and hire and develop the privacy and AI team.

Requirements

• JD from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• 8+ years of legal experience, including 6+ years of substantial privacy work and hands-on AI governance experience.
• Deep knowledge of HIPAA/HITECH, U.S. state privacy and consumer health data laws, and the emerging U.S. state AI law landscape.
• Demonstrated experience building or materially rebuilding privacy, AI governance, or end-to-end privacy incident response programs in a growth-stage or resource-constrained organization.
• Experience advising executives and presenting to a Board of Directors, with strong written communication and cross-functional leadership skills.
• Ability to operate effectively in a fast-growth environment with ambiguity, competing priorities, and evolving regulation.

Nice to have

• Experience with healthcare AI deployment, FDA SaMD/CDS analysis, clinical decision support governance, patient-facing AI disclosures, or HHS Section 1557.
• Familiarity with 42 CFR Part 2, information blocking rules, state Medicaid confidentiality requirements, NIST AI RMF, or ISO/IEC 42001.
• Experience with state Medicaid agencies, MCOs, government payors, or IAPP certifications.
