CAE Sr Engineer – Energy Consumption (Automotive)

Location: Hybrid role based in Novi, Michigan, or Charlotte, North Carolina, with 3–4 days per week in the office. Regular in-person meetings and occasional travel are required.

Salary: $130,000–$160,000 annual base salary, plus eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

An automotive company developing all-electric and range-extender powertrains for rugged SUVs and pickup trucks.

What you will do

• Conduct MATLAB/Simulink simulations, including Powertrain Blockset, to evaluate aerodynamics, rolling resistance, powertrain behavior, energy consumption, and vehicle range.
• Set, track, and validate energy-efficiency and range targets against product requirements and customer drive cycles.
• Collaborate with aerodynamics, thermal, and powertrain teams to integrate efficiency technologies such as lightweight materials and regenerative braking.
• Analyze energy losses, recommend design changes, and correlate simulation results with real-world driving data across varying conditions.
• Build, refine, and maintain simulation models while developing scripts and tools to automate analysis and improve workflows.
• Explore and deploy AI/ML models and methods to improve CAE model accuracy, scalability, and efficiency.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical engineering field.
• 8+ years of experience in an automotive vehicle modeling environment.
• Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Powertrain Blockset, model building, script writing, and tool development.
• Strong analytical understanding of aerodynamics, rolling resistance, and their impact on electric and hybrid vehicle efficiency.
• Familiarity with electric vehicle systems, including battery management, powertrain control, and regenerative braking.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative, adaptable approach.

Nice to have

• Co-simulation experience between MATLAB/Simulink and GT-Suite.
• Familiarity with GT-Suite and electrified-vehicle thermal systems.
• Experience conducting physical vehicle range testing across different temperatures, terrains, and load conditions.
