TL;DR
Senior Powertrain Engineer (Electric Vehicles): Designing and delivering the full electric powertrain for an autonomous, zero-emissions heavy-duty hauler with an accent on battery integration, high-voltage safety, thermal management, and system efficiency. Focus on modeling energy and thermal behavior, validating production-ready hardware, debugging vehicle systems, and managing technical risks across demanding real-world operating conditions.

Location: San Francisco, United States; on-site. Eligible to work in the United States.

Company

hirify.global is developing an autonomous, zero-emissions heavy-duty hauler using vision-based AI for the global logistics network.

What you will do

  • Own end-to-end development of the electric powertrain, including the battery pack, high-voltage distribution, motors, inverters, and drivetrain.
  • Define system architecture and trade-offs across performance, range, efficiency, thermal management, and durability.
  • Lead battery integration, including pack requirements, thermal strategy, high-voltage safety, and BMS interfaces.
  • Model energy consumption, thermal behavior, duty cycles, and degradation at the system level.
  • Plan and execute component, battery, vehicle, and durability validation, including prototype builds and hands-on debugging.
  • Manage supplier technical relationships, review designs, set engineering standards, and mitigate risks related to safety, thermal limits, and reliability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in electric powertrain, battery systems, or vehicle propulsion.
  • Strong fundamentals in electric machines, power electronics, and lithium-ion battery systems.
  • Experience with high-voltage system design and safety, system modeling tools, and hardware development from concept through validation.
  • Hands-on experience prototyping, testing, and debugging electromechanical systems.
  • Ability to work independently, make engineering decisions under uncertainty, and collaborate across controls, autonomy, electrical, and thermal teams.

Nice to have

  • Experience with heavy-duty trucks, commercial EV platforms, battery pack design, BMS, high-voltage distribution, or thermal management.
  • Experience with inverter and motor integration, controls, and scaling systems from prototype to production.
  • Familiarity with ISO 26262, SAE, FMVSS, or other automotive standards.
  • Experience in fast-paced startup or product development environments.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work in a fast-moving, close-knit team of autonomous vehicle industry veterans and innovative engineers.
  • Build safety-critical hardware for autonomous, zero-emissions freight transportation.
  • Artificial Intelligence tools may assist with comparing qualifications during interviews; a human reviews all output and makes the final decision.
