Staff Backend Engineer (Passwordless)

Location: Hybrid in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; in-person onboarding is required

Salary: CAD 160,000–220,000 annual base salary, plus equity where applicable, bonus, and benefits

What you will do

• Partner with product, design, and cross-functional stakeholders to define customer-focused solutions.
• Own major features from conception and technical design through deployment and monitoring.
• Lead design discussions, influence the roadmap, and make strategic trade-offs for product health and team velocity.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, knowledge sharing, and engineering best practices.
• Use telemetry and observability tools to troubleshoot production incidents and guide technical decisions.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software development experience with technical leadership and mentoring experience.
• Deep expertise in Java, object-oriented design, multithreading, and high-performance services.
• Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems in a cloud environment such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Knowledge of scalable, reliable, and secure architecture patterns, including phishing-resistant authentication with Passkeys, FIDO2, or WebAuthn.
• Experience with identity and access management protocols including OAuth, OIDC, and SAML.
• Strong problem-solving, ownership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

• Experience with modern frontend frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.
