Senior Staff Backend Engineer (Applications)

Location: Toronto, Canada; most teams work in the EST time zone.

What you will do

• Design and evolve backend services and architectural patterns across multiple teams and product domains.
• Architect relational, hierarchical, graph-like, and workflow-driven data models for large enterprise datasets.
• Lead complex backend initiatives spanning multiple services, domains, or teams while remaining hands-on.
• Improve system scalability, reliability, testing, observability, and operational simplicity.
• Translate ambiguous business requirements into maintainable backend designs with Product and Engineering leadership.
• Mentor senior and staff engineers and raise backend engineering standards across adjacent teams.

Requirements

• Extensive experience designing and building complex production backend systems at scale.
• Deep expertise in at least one production-grade backend language such as Python, Java, Kotlin, Go, or C#.
• Strong knowledge of relational schema design, data modeling, and SQL.
• Significant experience with hierarchical, graph-like, or relationship-heavy data structures.
• Experience leading architecture across multiple teams or domains and influencing technical direction.
• Experience improving scalability, reliability, and observability in distributed or data-intensive systems.

Nice to have

• Experience building SaaS products for mid-market or enterprise customers.
• Familiarity with graph databases, AWS infrastructure, Kubernetes, or rule-driven and approval workflows.
• Experience in Sales Performance Management, RevOps, Incentive Compensation, or related domains.
