TL;DR
Machine Shop Lead / CNC Machining Mentor (NASA HUNCH) (CNC machining/aerospace manufacturing): Leading production of certified aerospace hardware and mentoring teachers and students in NASA manufacturing standards with an accent on multi-axis CNC programming, GD&T, process documentation, and aerospace quality systems. Focus on optimizing machining of aerospace alloys, ensuring AS9100 and NASA compliance, and resolving first article inspection and nonconformance issues.

Location: Long Beach, California, United States. This role is based in Long Beach and requires applicants to be a U.S. Person under ITAR/EAR regulations.

Salary: $160,000–$180,000 USD annually.

What you will do

  • Lead the production of aerospace-grade flight and non-flight hardware under schedule, budget, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Review engineering drawings, GD&T, and specifications; assess manufacturability and identify risks.
  • Develop manufacturing plans, work instructions, process documentation, controls, and traceability requirements.
  • Write and optimize CNC programs for multi-axis mills, lathes, and other machine tools, managing tooling, fixturing, and setups.
  • Train teachers and students at partner schools to NASA manufacturing standards and guide them through the full manufacturing lifecycle.
  • Maintain AS9100, NASA, and applicable military standards while supporting first article inspection and nonconformance resolution.

Requirements

  • 10–15 years of machining experience in aerospace or mechanical hardware development, including supervisory or lead experience.
  • Proficiency with engineering drawings, GD&T, CAM-based CNC programming, and machining aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, and Inconel.
  • Working knowledge of AS9100, aerospace quality assurance, first article inspection, nonconformance disposition, and configuration/data management.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills for working with machinists, technicians, students, educators, and cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Must be a U.S. Person: a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual.
  • Must be eligible to obtain required export authorizations under ITAR and EAR.

Nice to have

  • NASA or NASA-contractor experience and familiarity with NASA/DoD work instructions and configuration management.
  • Experience with NASA systems including MIDAS, NAMS, QARC, EDMS, or JEDII.
  • Mastercam CAD/CAM, special process controls, Lean/Six Sigma training, or technical and manufacturing mentoring experience.
