TL;DR
Senior Structural Engineer - Simulation (Julia): Developing reduced-order structural models and automation pipelines that connect fast solvers with high-fidelity FEA for ocean energy devices, with an accent on structural mechanics, cloud computing, and production-grade simulation tooling. Focus on authoring complex load cases, validating models against first principles and Nastran results, and managing large-scale simulation workloads.

Location: Portland, Oregon. Candidates are strongly preferred to relocate to Portland; at minimum, the role requires the ability to travel to Portland intermittently. Relocation assistance is available if needed.

Salary: $150,000–$250,000 per year, plus company equity.

Company

hirify.global is a public benefit renewable energy and ocean technology company developing technologies that capture low-cost ocean energy for computing and renewable fuels.

What you will do

  • Maintain and advance a Julia-based reduced-order beam element analysis tool, including new load cases, bug fixes, and performance optimization.
  • Build automation pipelines connecting reduced-order models with high-fidelity FEA shell element models.
  • Define and analyze marine load environments such as wave slamming, tow loads, crane lifts, and fatigue with Marine Ops, Manufacturing, and Mechanical Engineering.
  • Own high-accuracy mass estimation for candidate devices and evolving design concepts.
  • Verify automated results with classical hand calculations and Nastran-based FEA.
  • Manage large-scale simulation data and cloud compute workloads using Docker, GCP, PostgreSQL, and Python.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or equivalent expertise.
  • 3+ years of experience combining structural analysis with software or tooling development.
  • Production-quality coding experience in Julia and Python.
  • Strong fundamentals in structural engineering, preferably involving large-scale steel structures.
  • Familiarity with marine load environments, including hydrodynamics, mooring, or offshore structures.
  • Experience with Git, Docker, cloud computing environments, and Nastran or similar structural solvers.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree focused on computational mechanics or structural dynamics.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL or relational databases for large simulation datasets.
  • Experience building human-in-the-loop automation tools for engineering workflows.
  • Ability to use AI for code generation while identifying errors through technical judgment.
  • Curiosity about device dynamics beyond structural analysis.

Culture & Benefits

  • Creative, scrappy, collaborative environment organized around idea meritocracy.
  • Flexible working hours, substantial autonomy, work-life balance, and unlimited PTO.
  • Relocation assistance for a move to Portland.
  • Equity participation for employees.
  • Company-paid gold-level PPO health insurance, dental and vision insurance, disability insurance, and access to 401(k), health FSA, and dependent care FSA accounts.
