TL;DR
Electric Motor Design Engineer (Aerospace): Designing and developing high-voltage electric motors for the ES-30 hybrid-electric aircraft with an accent on permanent magnet motor design, electromagnetic optimization, and certifiable propulsion integration. Focus on leading motor and propeller test-stand activities, collaborating with suppliers, and creating manufacturable motor designs for aerospace certification.

Location: Los Angeles, CA, United States

Base pay: $124,000–$216,000 USD per year

Company

Develops the ES-30, a 30-passenger regional hybrid-electric airplane with a zero-emission electric range of 200 km and an extended hybrid range of 400 km.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, commission, and support certification of high-voltage electric motors for the aircraft’s hybrid propulsion system.
  • Lead system-level testing using motor and propeller test stands, including instrumentation, controls, and mechanical assembly.
  • Coordinate with mechanical, thermal, power electronics, airframe, and battery teams to integrate a certifiable Electric Propulsion Unit.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to deliver integrated and certifiable subsystems.
  • Perform avionics-optimized electric motor topology trade studies and create 2D/3D CAD models using tools such as Siemens NX.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of professional experience designing high-voltage, high-power electric motors.
  • Deep knowledge of permanent magnet motor design, modeling, and analysis.
  • Proficiency with JMAG, Ansys Maxwell, RMxpert, or MotorCAD.
  • Experience designing and optimizing electromagnetic active parts for manufacturing and certification.
  • Strong understanding of stator winding, lamination stacking, stator varnishing, heat treatment, statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials.
  • Master’s or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of EASA CS-23/25 or FAA FAR Part 23/25 certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of aerospace airworthiness standards including DO-254 and DO-160.
  • Experience developing and maintaining design failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA).
