Battery Engineer (Spacecraft)

Location: San Carlos, California, United States; On-site. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals, or eligible to obtain the authorizations required under ITAR.

Salary: $167,000–$230,000 annually.

What you will do

• Own spacecraft battery architecture and development from concept through flight qualification.
• Design battery packs, module architectures, cell configurations, and electrical interconnects.
• Develop BMS capabilities including cell balancing, SOC/SOH estimation, fault detection, and protection strategies.
• Select cell chemistries and components, perform sizing and degradation analysis, and define charging and discharge strategies.
• Define thermal management and thermal runaway mitigation requirements with thermal engineering.
• Lead battery integration, validation, environmental qualification, launch campaign support, and on-orbit performance monitoring.

Requirements

• BS, MS, or PhD in electrical, mechanical, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related discipline.
• 3+ years of battery systems development in aerospace, automotive, defense, or another high-reliability field.
• Experience designing battery packs and energy storage systems, including cell, module, pack architecture, and electrical interconnects.
• Knowledge of lithium-ion chemistries such as NMC, NCA, and LFP, along with degradation and safety mechanisms.
• Experience developing or integrating BMS solutions, battery testing and validation, modeling, and hardware debugging.
• Must meet ITAR eligibility requirements for work in the United States.

Nice to have

• Spacecraft or satellite battery development experience, including radiation effects and flight hardware support.
• Battery thermal modeling, thermal runaway mitigation, and coupled thermal-electrochemical simulation experience.
• Knowledge of NASA, ECSS, aerospace qualification, environmental verification, and battery safety standards.
• Experience with FMEA, fault tree analysis, abuse testing, isolated cell monitoring, and BMS IC platforms.
• Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or equivalent battery modeling and analysis tools.
