TL;DR
Power Systems Engineer | Battery R&D (Electric Aviation): Designing high-voltage protection schemes, battery models, and electrical validation tests for new electric aircraft configurations with an accent on system architecture, fault analysis, and aircraft-level integration. Focus on building Simulink models, diagnosing model-to-hardware discrepancies, analyzing test data, and supporting battery certification through hands-on laboratory and aircraft testing.

Location: South Burlington, Vermont, United States; onsite work with travel to BETA locations around Burlington as needed

Salary: $100,000–$125,000 USD per year

What you will do

  • Design electrical protection schemes for new aircraft configurations, from architecture modeling through full-scale validation testing.
  • Design and execute electrical system tests, including data acquisition hardware specification, laboratory testing, and aircraft testing.
  • Build battery models integrated with aircraft flight-science simulations for system-level analysis and design trades.
  • Partner with the high-voltage team on mechanical design and apply fuse-coordination insights to aircraft design.
  • Collaborate with software, electrical, and systems engineering teams to support battery certification.
  • Analyze test data, refine system models, and solve cross-functional engineering problems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience modeling real-world systems with a relevant language or tool such as Python or MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Ability to synthesize large and complex datasets into actionable engineering insights.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Initiative, adaptability, and willingness to experiment, learn, and own problems.
  • Ability to work onsite in South Burlington and travel to BETA locations around Burlington as needed.

Nice to have

  • Experience with power systems and active or passive high-voltage protections.
  • Experience contributing to EV or other HVDC system design.
  • Hands-on data acquisition system design, including sampling, filtering, resolution, and instrumentation.
  • Experience with design of experiments, system identification, and diagnosing model-to-hardware discrepancies.
  • Experience with aviation certification standards such as DO-178 or DO-160, or other safety-critical environments.
