TL;DR
Plastics Material Engineer (Automotive): Developing and optimizing plastics and A-surface materials for electric pickup trucks and rugged SUVs with an accent on material testing, quality standards, and production readiness. Focus on assessing surrogate data to predict material risks, managing supplier and manufacturing timelines, and aligning engineering, design, and purchasing teams.

Location: Novi, Michigan, United States, with transition to Charlotte, North Carolina; four days in the office required. Regular in-person meetings, events, and business travel are expected. This role is not eligible for remote work in New York City.

Salary: $110,000–$135,000 annual base salary, plus eligibility for an annual performance bonus. California range: $121,000–$148,500.

What you will do

  • Develop innovative and optimized material solutions for new Scout truck and SUV products.
  • Collaborate with design teams on material planning and interior styling.
  • Monitor consumer experience and propose system improvements.
  • Lead new-material testing and alignment with quality and manufacturing standards.
  • Assess surrogate data to predict material risks and manage resources, suppliers, infrastructure, and budgets.
  • Serve as a technical leadership decision-maker and liaison across engineering, design, purchasing, and other functions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in materials engineering, chemical engineering, or an equivalent engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited university.
  • 5–8+ years of materials engineering experience with relevant automotive assignments across design, testing, and launch.
  • Strong plastics engineering expertise for vehicle interiors and exteriors, with a first-principles problem-solving approach.
  • Experience with A-surface materials such as leather, artificial leather, fabric, carpet, paint, films, molded-in color, and veneers.
  • Familiarity with the local materials supply chain and production delivery timelines.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, relationship-building, and cross-functional coordination skills.
