Staff BESS Electrical Design Engineer (EPC)

What you will do

• Lead electrical engineering for utility-scale lithium-ion BESS projects from concept, system sizing, and layout through construction.
• Design AC and DC electrical systems, including medium-voltage transformers, inverters, DC combiners, energy managers, battery modules, protection, grounding, and raceways.
• Support utility and ISO/RTO interconnection studies, permitting, regulatory compliance, and grid integration with renewable and traditional energy sources.
• Produce schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring plans, IFC packages, technical specifications, cost estimates, and project schedules.
• Perform short-circuit, load-flow, arc-flash, and protective-device coordination studies; provide construction administration support for RFIs, submittals, change orders, and inspections.
• Act as the BESS subject matter expert and Electrical Engineer of Record, lead R&D on medium-voltage DC distribution, review designs, mentor junior engineers, and manage delivery.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Professional Engineer license in Nevada or eligibility for reciprocity; Nevada and South Carolina PE licenses must be obtained within two months of starting.
• At least five years of experience in solar, energy storage, or microgrids, including three years focused on BESS design and deployment.
• Expertise in BESS interconnection, regulatory compliance, and NEC 705, NEC 706, IEEE 1547, UL 9540, and NFPA 855.
• Advanced proficiency with HOMER or similar microgrid modeling tools, ETAP or SKM, and AutoCAD/Revit, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office.
• Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills, with a proactive and detail-oriented approach.

Nice to have

• Transmission-level load-flow and stability analysis using PSSE or PSLF.
• Electromagnetic transient simulations using PSCAD, EMTC, or similar tools.
• SEL relay settings, HVDC system and converter-station design, and knowledge of energy-storage use cases such as peak shaving, load shifting, demand response, and frequency response.
