TL;DR
Robotics Reliability Engineer (Robotics): Maintaining the health of a deployed humanoid robot fleet through hardware failure analysis, hands-on repair, mechanical fixture design, and fleet telemetry with an accent on actuators, controls, calibration, and reliability metrics. Focus on root-causing degradation across hardware and software, building calibration and monitoring tools, and turning measured mechanical evidence into verifiable design and deployment fixes.

Location: Redwood City, California, United States; on-site

Salary: $160,000–$200,000 annual base salary, plus equity

What you will do

  • Root-cause actuator dropouts, encoder and calibration drift, thermal events, CAN bus faults, and control-stack issues across the deployed robot fleet.
  • Bench-test, repair, solder, re-commission, and physically validate electromechanical components and assemblies.
  • Design and fabricate test fixtures, jigs, brackets, mounts, and other mechanical modifications for fielded robots.
  • Build fleet health metrics, degradation alerts, calibration tools, characterization sweeps, and firmware and software validation harnesses.
  • Extract and decode constrained robot telemetry, improve monitoring pipelines, and analyze logs at scale.
  • Create runbooks, SOPs, incident reports, handoff packages, and review fixes across firmware, controls, and deployment configuration.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of experience in robotics, mechatronics, hardware test, or reliability engineering, including substantial work with fielded hardware.
  • Hands-on experience using soldering irons, multimeters, calipers, test fixtures, and electromechanical teardown and repair techniques.
  • Understanding of actuator failure modes, including backlash, wear, preload loss, and end-stop damage.
  • Working knowledge of robot control, impedance and torque-controlled actuators, force-control parameters, and boot, emergency-stop, and reconnect lifecycles.
  • Strong Python skills for data analysis and tooling, with experience analyzing time series, signal statistics, drift, persistence, and alert quality.
  • Fluency with actuators, motor control, encoders, torque and current telemetry, CAN, calibration procedures, observability tools such as Datadog, Git, and pull-request workflows.

Nice to have

  • Experience with teleoperation systems, VR interfaces, or data-collection fleets.
  • Hardware qualification experience across EVT, DVT, or PVT, or experience with manufacturing and incoming tests.
  • Simulation sanity-checking experience in MuJoCo.
  • Experience building tools and SOPs adopted by other engineers.
