Staff Software Engineer (PHP/Python/AWS)

What you will do

• Design and build globally scalable software for marketplace services, including messaging, payments, translations, file services, and notifications.
• Lead architectural decisions across team and adjacent projects while balancing correctness, simplicity, and delivery speed.
• Plan and execute incremental modernisation, migrations, and upgrades across the stack and codebase.
• Optimise, debug, and harden systems spanning data models, deployment pipelines, infrastructure, monitoring, and alerting.
• Champion testing, code quality, observability, incident response, and post-incident learning.
• Mentor engineers, communicate technical trade-offs, contribute to interviews, and help raise engineering standards.

Requirements

• Computer Science or related Engineering degree.
• 7+ years of experience shipping and maintaining large-scale web systems.
• Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages, including Go, Python, PHP, or Node.js.
• Solid SQL and relational database skills, preferably MySQL, with sound data modelling experience.
• Cloud experience, preferably AWS, and Linux proficiency.
• Experience leading large projects, setting technical direction, owning major services or code areas, and handling significant incidents.

Nice to have

• Service-oriented or microservice architecture and containerisation experience.
• Modern TypeScript and a frontend framework such as Angular, React, or Vue.
• Strong computer networking knowledge.
• Understanding of OWASP and web security best practices.
