Senior Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails)

Location: Budapest, Hungary; hybrid work model with onsite work at least 50% of the time for employees within commuting distance of a hirify.global office

What you will do

• Design, build, review, test, and maintain Ruby on Rails features and services.
• Own technical delivery for projects, epics, and major user stories from solution design through production.
• Develop and evolve RESTful APIs and web applications for scalability, maintainability, and performance.
• Contribute to architectural decisions, prototypes, component separation, and platform modernization.
• Collaborate with Product, QA, DevOps, Security, and engineering teams to deliver production software.
• Improve code quality and engineering practices through reviews, automated testing, documentation, mentoring, and responsible use of AI-assisted tools.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building commercial web applications and services.
• Strong hands-on Ruby on Rails experience delivering production-grade backend or full-stack applications.
• Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and web services.
• Experience with secure software, DevOps, infrastructure as code, and automated delivery practices.
• Understanding of microservices, service-oriented architectures, distributed-system trade-offs, Git, GitHub, SQL, and data modeling.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to mentor engineers and work with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have

• AWS experience and modern cloud deployment patterns.
• Experience with message queues, asynchronous processing, or event-driven integrations.
• Familiarity with CI/CD, containerization, observability, and operational ownership.
• Experience modernizing legacy Rails applications or evolving platforms.
• Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
