OBA Research Scientist/Engineer – Fusion Energy Systems

Location: San Leandro, California, United States

Salary: $200,000–$350,000 annual full-time equivalent, prorated according to agreed weekly hours, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead and contribute to fusion energy research and development projects from concept through prototype.
• Integrate fusion energy target design, fabrication, diagnostics, and supporting technologies into deployable systems.
• Apply expertise across fusion energy science, engineering, experimentation, modeling, controls, materials, and related technical domains.
• Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national and international fusion energy conferences.

Requirements

• Be a current U.S. national laboratory employee interested in participating through an Outside Business Activity.
• Hold a Ph.D. or an M.S. with significant experience in physics, engineering, or a related discipline.
• Bring strong computational, experimental, or engineering skills relevant to fusion energy research.
• Have expertise in one or more fusion energy areas, such as plasma physics, target design, diagnostics, modeling and simulation, AI/ML applications, control systems, or fusion energy systems engineering.
