TL;DR
Plasma-Materials Scientist (Fusion) (plasma-facing materials): Developing and evaluating plasma-facing materials for stellarator fusion systems with an accent on material survivability, erosion, contamination, and plasma-surface interactions. Focus on constructing plasma exposure devices, operating diagnostics, performing surface characterization, and applying simulation tools for thermal and multi-physics analysis.

Location: On-site in Kearny, New Jersey, United States

Salary: $100,000–$160,000 per year

Company

hirify.global is developing a simpler commercial fusion-energy approach based on stellarator physics and computer-controlled arrays of planar coils.

What you will do

  • Construct and commission a plasma device and diagnostics for exposing and evaluating plasma-facing materials.
  • Collaborate with plasma-material exposure facilities and perform surface characterization.
  • Provide technical guidance on plasma-device operation, material-performance assessment, and experimental planning.
  • Plan operational campaigns for stellarator plasma-facing components.
  • Perform plasma-surface interaction simulations, thermal analysis, and multi-physics modeling.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in materials science, engineering, applied plasma physics, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of basic plasma physics and experience with vacuum systems.
  • Experience with experimental plasma setups and diagnostics, including RF plasmas, spectroscopy, laser-based diagnostics, or electrostatic probes.
  • Experience with surface analysis techniques such as electron microscopy, atomic-scale microscopy, XPS, EDX, or Raman.
  • Experience with one or more of Python, MATLAB, FEA tools, COMSOL, C++, or Fortran.
  • Ability to work independently, manage projects, maintain strong attention to detail, and collaborate with scientists and engineers.

Nice to have

  • PhD in applied plasma physics or a related field.
  • Experience with fusion boundary plasmas, low-temperature plasmas, or linear plasma devices.
  • Tokamak or stellarator divertor research experience.
  • Experience with ERO2.0, TRIDYN, SDTrimSP/TRIM, WALLDYN, or RustBCA.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time employment with on-site collaboration.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Employee equity stock options.
  • 20 days of paid time off.
  • Equal opportunity workplace focused on diverse scientific and engineering perspectives.
