Avionics Engineer, Flight Computer

Location: On-site in San Carlos, California, United States. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual, or eligible to obtain the required ITAR authorizations.

Salary: $120,000–$175,000 annually

What you will do

• Architect and design spacecraft flight computer hardware from concept through flight qualification.
• Own schematic capture, component selection, board bring-up, debugging, verification, and hardware characterization.
• Design reliable digital electronics using processors, SoCs, FPGAs, memory, and high-speed interfaces.
• Develop fault-tolerant architectures with redundancy, watchdogs, and fault detection, isolation, and recovery.
• Define interfaces between the flight computer and spacecraft power, propulsion, GNC, payload, communications, and telemetry systems.
• Support manufacturing, environmental qualification, launch campaigns, and on-orbit anomaly resolution.

Requirements

• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 5+ years of experience developing complex digital hardware and processor-based embedded systems.
• Strong schematic capture, board-level debugging, and laboratory measurement skills.
• Experience with interfaces such as DDR, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, PCIe, or SpaceWire.
• Experience taking hardware from prototype through production and proficiency with Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, OrCAD, or equivalent tools.
• Must meet U.S. ITAR eligibility requirements.

Nice to have

• Spacecraft or launch vehicle avionics experience.
• Radiation-tolerant or radiation-hardened electronics experience.
• Familiarity with ECSS, NASA, or MIL hardware design standards.
• Experience with high-speed digital design, SI/PI analysis, timing closure, and environmental qualification testing.
• Embedded Linux, RTOS, bare-metal, launch, or flight operations experience.
