Sr. Manager US Payroll

Location: Hybrid in Bridgewater, New Jersey, United States. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.

Salary: $127,313–$167,099 USD per year, plus performance-based bonus and/or equity for eligible roles.

What you will do

• Own end-to-end, multi-state, bi-weekly U.S. payroll processing, including off-cycle payments, bonuses, equity, garnishments, deductions, tax updates, retroactive pay, and leave payments.
• Lead payroll governance, controls, documentation, reconciliations, audit readiness, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, wage and hour laws, SOX controls, and company policies.
• Manage year-end payroll activities, including W-2 processing, tax reporting, reconciliations, regulatory filings, and support for internal and external audits.
• Drive payroll system enhancements, testing, automation, process optimization, and improvements to HRIS and payroll integrations, reporting, data integrity, and workflows.
• Act as the payroll subject matter expert for HR, Finance, Accounting, Tax, Compensation, Benefits, Legal, Internal Audit, business leaders, and external vendors.
• Provide functional leadership, coach payroll team members where applicable, resolve escalated inquiries, and support acquisitions, reorganizations, and policy changes.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in HR, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
• 8–10+ years of progressive payroll experience, including leadership of complex, multi-state U.S. payroll operations.
• Expert knowledge of U.S. payroll operations, payroll tax regulations, wage and hour laws, and multi-state payroll administration.
• Strong understanding of SOX compliance, internal controls, audit practices, and payroll governance.
• Advanced knowledge of payroll systems, HRIS platforms, payroll providers, and Microsoft Excel; Workday Payroll and/or Workday HCM experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong leadership, coaching, prioritization, deadline management, integrity, and discretion when handling confidential payroll information.

Nice to have

• Experience in a publicly traded or SOX-compliant environment.
• Experience leading payroll system implementations, enhancements, or transformation initiatives.
• Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification.
• Experience with OSV payroll providers.
