Engineering Manager (Backend)

Location: Hybrid in downtown Toronto, Ontario, with office attendance three times per week. Candidates must be authorized to work in Canada, excluding Quebec.

Salary: CAD 140,000–180,000 per year.

What you will do

• Lead and support a team of engineers, including performance management, career development, hiring, mentoring, and team administration.
• Set the technical direction and roadmap for backend platforms supporting social, notifications, subscriptions, and coin economy features.
• Lead technical design, planning, documentation, and solutioning with Product and other engineering teams.
• Review designs, technical plans, documentation, and code while providing hands-on technical guidance.
• Coordinate project resourcing, estimates, blockers, and communication across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Maintain engineering quality standards and foster long-term thinking and innovation.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software development experience, including at least 3 years managing a team of three or more engineers, including senior-level engineers.
• Significant experience designing and building backend distributed systems, APIs, applications, and system architectures.
• Experience writing and critiquing technical design documentation with diagrams.
• Expert-level experience developing on Unix-based platforms and experience with a compiled language such as C++, Java, Golang, or Rust.
• Strong technical decision-making, communication, stakeholder collaboration, and mentoring skills.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field; authorization to work in Canada excluding Quebec is required, and work permit sponsorship is unavailable.

Nice to have

• Experience as a Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, or Architect.
• AWS Cloud experience.
• Experience with OpenAPI, gRPC, Protobuf, Docker, containerization, or Kubernetes.
• Experience with Golang.
