Senior Back End Engineer (Data Platform)

Location: Toronto, Canada; most of the team works in the EST time zone, with some members in PST and Central time zones.

Salary: 150,000–190,000 CAD per year.

What you will do

• Design, build, and improve Spark-based data pipelines and platform services.
• Work with complex data models covering sales compensation plans, hierarchies, relationships, and enterprise datasets.
• Build deterministic data systems and improve testing, observability, data quality, reliability, and scalability.
• Translate complex business requirements into scalable data designs with Product, Engineering, and Analytics.
• Participate in system design discussions, design reviews, code reviews, technical discussions, and knowledge sharing.
• Use AI tooling to improve delivery speed while maintaining strong engineering standards.

Requirements

• Strong production experience building data or backend systems.
• Experience with Spark or similar data processing and ETL frameworks.
• Proficiency in a production-grade language such as Python, Java, Scala, Kotlin, Go, or C#.
• Strong SQL, relational schema design, and data modeling skills.
• Experience with large-scale, hierarchical, graph-like, relationship-heavy, or workflow-driven datasets.
• Ability to reason through technical tradeoffs, identify risks, and improve scalability, reliability, observability, or maintainability.

Nice to have

• Experience building SaaS products for mid-market or enterprise customers.
• Experience with rule-driven systems, validation workflows, calculation engines, or approval platforms.
• Familiarity with AWS, Kubernetes, graph databases, or graph-based modeling.
• Exposure to Sales Performance Management, RevOps, or incentive compensation.
