TL;DR
HTS Magnet Engineer (Fusion Energy): Designing, building, and testing high-temperature superconducting magnets for stellarator fusion systems with an accent on multiphysics simulation, manufacturing integration, and magnet performance. Focus on developing magnet specifications and design tools, supporting first builds, and executing tests in an industrial cryogenic and high-voltage environment.

Location: Kearny, NJ, United States; on-site

Salary: $85,000–$150,000 per year

Develops stellarator fusion energy systems using computer-controlled arrays of planar high-temperature superconducting coils.

What you will do

  • Rapidly design, build, and test HTS magnets.
  • Develop magnet specifications based on system design and performance goals.
  • Optimize magnet designs and perform multiphysics analysis using Ansys, COMSOL, or similar software.
  • Develop Python-based design tools, data-analysis software, and engineering algorithms.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing principles, support first builds, and coordinate tooling and manufacturing activities.
  • Specify fabrication requirements, collaborate with vendors, execute magnet testing, and report progress against program milestones.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with magnets, cryogenics, vacuum systems, transformer design, or comparable technical systems.
  • Experience with CAD software and Ansys or COMSOL.
  • Experience specifying machining, welding, and fabrication requirements.
  • Ability to solve multidisciplinary engineering problems and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work on-site in a facility with industrial hazards, including strong magnets, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. may be required.

Nice to have

  • Experience in magnetic confinement fusion, aerospace, medical devices, or other highly technical industries.
  • Experience with stellarator or fusion-energy engineering.
