TL;DR
Diagnostician (Fusion Energy): Developing and commissioning diagnostic subsystems for the SPARC tokamak with an accent on scientific instrumentation, plasma measurement, and integration with plant-level control systems. Focus on completing diagnostic designs, planning assembly and calibration, automating experimental equipment, and obtaining physics results during tokamak operation.
Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; on-site
Salary: $110,000–$185,000 per year, plus equity and benefits
Company
is developing commercially viable fusion power plants and assembling the high-field SPARC tokamak to demonstrate net fusion energy.
What you will do
- Guide SPARC diagnostic subsystems through final design with scientists, designers, analysts, and engineers.
- Integrate expert input into diagnostic designs supporting SPARC mission goals.
- Develop assembly, installation, calibration, and commissioning plans to support first plasma on schedule.
- Integrate diagnostics with plant-level and real-time plasma control systems.
- Test and operate diagnostic systems while obtaining physics results.
- Collaborate with CFS designers, analysts, MIT-PSFC partners, and academic collaborators while contributing to a strong safety culture.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, civil, nuclear engineering, or a related field.
- Experience designing a new or upgraded scientific instrument comparable in scale and complexity to instruments used in magnetically confined fusion.
- Experience using scientific instruments to support an operational or research mission.
- Software development experience with Python, Matlab, C++, or equivalent for experimental data analysis and laboratory automation.
- Hands-on knowledge of diagnostic systems, such as vacuum systems, lasers, and calibration sources, with the ability to bridge engineering and physics tradeoffs.
- Ability to work around industrial hazards including strong magnets, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, lead, and cryogenics; occasional nights, weekends, on-call work, travel, and lifting up to 50 lbs may be required.
Nice to have
- Experience designing and implementing a plasma diagnostic for a university-scale or larger magnetically confined fusion experiment.
Culture & Benefits
- 13 company-wide holidays and flexible vacation days.
- 10 sick days and generous parental leave.
- Health, dental, and vision insurance.
- 401(k) with employer matching.
