Staff Firmware Security Architect (Embedded Security)

Location: Palo Alto, United States; on-site

Salary: $200,000–$240,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, and location.

What you will do

• Define secure boot and root-of-trust architecture across MCU families, including image signing, verification, anti-rollback, and production debug lockdown.
• Own on-device and fleet key strategies, key hierarchies, provisioning, HSM or secure-element integration, and PKI services.
• Lead CAN/CAN-FD security, protected diagnostics, secure UDS access, and end-to-end OTA trust for firmware updates.
• Architect reusable security libraries and APIs for cryptography, secure storage, and authentication across ECU teams.
• Lead threat modeling, security reviews, hardening, and production-readiness activities across boot, update, and network attack surfaces.
• Drive security testing, CI integration, cross-functional alignment, and mentorship across firmware, cloud, manufacturing, and systems teams.

Requirements

• 8+ years of embedded software or firmware development experience with deep ownership of secure boot, cryptography, or vehicle/IoT security architecture.
• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline, preferably Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
• Hands-on expertise with AES, ECC/RSA, HMAC, certificates, key provisioning, OTP/fuse programming, and HSM or secure-element deployment.
• Production experience designing secure boot chains, bootloaders, signed firmware images, and OTA trust models.
• Expert-level C/C++ on bare-metal or RTOS platforms, including linkers, memory maps, and JTAG/SWD debugging.
• Ability to integrate signing and verification into CI and release pipelines, document architecture and threat models, and mentor senior engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience securing vehicle or industrial networks using CAN/CAN-FD, authenticated messaging, and secure diagnostics.
• Experience with FreeRTOS, Zephyr, ThreadX, hardware-in-the-loop testing, or emulation.
• Master’s degree or equivalent depth of experience.
