TL;DR
Health Physics Technician (HPT) (Nuclear Radiation Protection): Establishing and maintaining radiological protection programs for the development, commissioning, and operation of advanced nuclear facilities with an accent on field surveys, contamination control, dosimetry, and regulatory compliance. Focus on assessing changing radiological conditions, supporting emergency response, operating radiation detection instrumentation, and strengthening nuclear safety work controls.

Location: Onsite in Orangeville, Utah; willingness to relocate to Utah required. Periodic travel to headquarters in Hawthorne, California.

What you will do

  • Perform radiation, contamination, airborne radioactivity, and personnel monitoring surveys across facilities and worksites.
  • Provide radiological coverage for operations, maintenance, construction, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Implement radiological work controls, postings, barriers, access controls, contamination boundaries, and ALARA practices.
  • Issue and maintain dosimetry, monitoring equipment, protective equipment, and radiological work documentation.
  • Operate, check, and maintain ion chambers, GM survey meters, contamination monitors, friskers, and air sampling equipment.
  • Support emergency response, audits, inspections, procedure development, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement of radiological protection programs.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or higher in Health Physics, Radiation Protection, Nuclear Technology, or a related scientific discipline; alternatively, a high school diploma with a formal recognized HPT qualification program or current NRRPT certification.
  • Experience performing surveys involving alpha, beta, gamma, and neutron radiation, including contamination and smear/swipe surveys.
  • Proficiency operating portable health physics instrumentation and radiological monitoring equipment.
  • Working knowledge of contamination control, radiological postings, RWPs, personnel monitoring, and ALARA principles.
  • Ability to identify changing radiological conditions, communicate effectively across technical teams, and work in industrial environments with required PPE.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

Nice to have

  • DOE facility, national laboratory, DOE contractor, commercial nuclear power, reactor operations, startup, commissioning, maintenance, or refueling experience.
  • Current NRRPT certification and familiarity with reactor systems and associated radiological hazards.
  • Experience with 10 CFR 835, emergency preparedness, radiological protection programs, procedures, and work controls.
