Staff Process Development Engineer (Backend)

Location: United Kingdom - Towcester, Northamptonshire; based at the Caswell semiconductor fabrication site

What you will do

• Develop, qualify, maintain, and continuously improve semiconductor manufacturing processes.
• Optimise thin-film deposition, metallization, and backend wafer-processing operations, including mounting, thinning, back grinding, CMP, cleaving, and dicing.
• Analyse process and equipment data using SPC, Six Sigma, DOE, Lean Manufacturing, and statistical methods.
• Perform equipment qualification and cross-qualification to improve capacity, equipment availability, yield, and cycle times.
• Support new product introduction, technology transfer, fault finding, equipment recovery, and production operations with multidisciplinary teams.
• Lead or participate in yield improvement, defect reduction, process capability, and cost-reduction initiatives in a semiconductor cleanroom.

Requirements

• HNC/HND, bachelor's, master's, or PhD in Semiconductor Technology, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent industrial experience.
• Experience in semiconductor, photonics, compound semiconductor, MEMS, optoelectronics, silicon photonics, or another advanced manufacturing environment.
• Knowledge of SPC, DOE, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, and root cause analysis.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills, with the ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
• Competent PC user, including Microsoft Office, with knowledge of manufacturing execution systems.
• Ability to work in a semiconductor cleanroom, perform wet etching, follow site safety procedures, and work shifts when required.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of photonic integrated circuit manufacture.
• Experience in a high-technology manufacturing or production environment.
