Engineering Manager (Go)

Location: Vienna, Austria; hybrid setup with a valid Austrian work permit required

What you will do

• Lead one or more engineering teams of 5–12 engineers building Go-based backend services for a distributed fiscalisation platform.
• Own hiring, one-to-ones, feedback, performance management, career growth, and promotion sponsorship.
• Set technical direction with tech leads and senior engineers, make architectural decisions, and manage technical debt.
• Plan and deliver multi-quarter outcomes with a product manager, translating unclear problems into credible plans and surfacing risks early.
• Improve engineering processes using flow and capacity signals while coordinating dependencies with peer engineering managers.
• Partner with QE and SRE on quality, reliability, incident response, and closed postmortem actions.

Requirements

• Engineering background with previous experience as a software engineer and the ability to make sound technical decisions.
• At least 4 years managing software engineers as a manager rather than as a tech lead.
• Track record of delivering product outcomes through a team over multiple quarters.
• Experience launching and operating services at scale in a distributed system.
• Ability to challenge technical designs, weigh trade-offs, communicate complex topics clearly, and set direction with incomplete information.
• Fluent English required; a valid Austrian work permit is required.

Nice to have

• Experience in regulated or compliance-sensitive domains such as fiscalisation, payments, fintech, or healthtech.
• Experience with Go, distributed systems, or observability.
• Leadership experience during a rewrite, migration, reliability turnaround, or scaling phase.
• Scale-up experience or hands-on experience with agentic workflows and LLM-assisted development.
