Staff Backend Software Engineer (IoT)

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States; onsite

Salary: $209,600–$314,400 per year, with a target midpoint of $262,000. The range may be adjusted according to geographic differentials.

What you will do

• Own backend services for printer identity, connectivity, provisioning, updates, and telemetry.
• Design and improve Linux bring-up, installation, OS update, and rollback systems for printers in the field.
• Build reliable protocols and connections between the cloud and printers across unreliable networks, firewalls, and extended offline periods.
• Lead major cloud-to-device platform initiatives from architecture and design through production rollout.
• Participate in on-call rotation, incident response, postmortems, and long-term reliability improvements.
• Provide technical leadership through architecture, design and code reviews, cross-team collaboration, and mentorship.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building and operating production backend services and leading major initiatives end to end.
• Deep Linux expertise, including processes, filesystems, networking, systemd, boot and init, package management, users, and permissions.
• Strong networking knowledge covering TCP/IP, TLS, DNS, HTTP, WebSockets, NAT, and firewall traversal.
• Hands-on experience provisioning, imaging, updating, and rolling back Linux systems in the field, including A/B update strategies or similar approaches.
• Expert proficiency in C++, TypeScript, or a similar modern backend language, plus strong debugging, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Experience building IoT or connected-device backends at scale.
• Production experience with MQTT or similar pub/sub protocols, including broker operations, QoS, and offline/reconnect behavior.
• Experience with fleet management, remote diagnostics, OTA updates, edge computing, embedded Linux, hardware bring-up, Bazel, or another polyglot monorepo build system.
